Understanding the Parts of a Window

If people are unable to correctly identify the different parts of a window, they’re going to have a hard time following the majority of different directions for home repair. Knowing the different parts of a window will help people become more handy around the house on many different levels, since they’re also going to be that much better at diagnosing problems with their windows themselves. They will also be able to explain problems with their windows much more articulately to their repair workers, if necessary, rather than describing the problem in a very vague way. There is technical jargon involved with home repairs, and the people who want to be able to do this themselves to any extent will have to learn the jargon.

Identify Parts of a Window

The sill of a window is formally known as the stool of a window, and it is the part of a window that extends outwardly in the manner of a shelf. The size of the sill is going to vary in many cases, but the basic look of a window sill is almost always going to be the same for most windows.

The grids of the window are formally known as the muntins. Sometimes, they hold the glass in place and divide the glass into sections, and sometimes they are only there for decoration. The technical terms for the parts of a window are going to be different from a lot of the colloquial terms, which is going to cause some confusion for the people who are trying to follow all of the directions at home.

The window frame consists of the side pieces, which are known as the jambs, and the horizontal rails. The rails connect the stiles and hold the glass in place. The jambs hold the sash, and therefore the glass indirectly. The sash receives some additional support from the stiles. People will notice a horizontal board that is located just below the stool that attaches the window to the wall, and this is known as the apron. The windows and the wall are connected on the rest of the sides of the window through the head and side casing.

People open and close the window using a mechanism known as the casement operator. It partly operates through the use of the extension arm. The window is sealed and locked through the use of the latch. The latch is going to work separately from the window operator and the crank handle extension arm, but its function is similar.

The glass of the windows will also have specific names. The glass of the window frame is the glazing. The more energy efficient windows are going to have double glazing or triple pane, which is going to allow them to retain the heat that much more effectively. Either way, in technical manuals, the glass is usually going to be referred to as the glazing, which is going to cause some confusion for some people who are used to thinking of glazing as a layer of shine for a window. Really, this would be glazing for the glazing.
